GRRL HAUS//Double Feature
SEPTEMBER 28, 2020 Loophole Berlin
Once a month we screen a Grrl Haus approved short film and an accompanying *surprise* film.
For this event we will be showing Cold Blooded, directed by Kidd Tommy
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkWKEUy8ZG8
For the second film .... only way to find out is to come and watch
Cold Blooded follows the titillating tale of a scorned amateur herpetologist who enacts a twisted revenge on her deadbeat guitarist ex. Despite worst intentions, the plan backfires and instead leads to the rise of Rex Komodo, a reptilian rock god with big hair and an even bigger appetite for blood.
Written, directed, produced, edited and audio engineered by a female crew.
Kidd Tommy is a first time writer/director/producer living in Austin, Texas. She is inspired by her time spent working the counter at a local video store, passing time by making her way through shelves of horror, cult, heavy metal and exploitation films.

We won’t wait for the Apocalypse!

Covid19 is slowly revealing that we must all become the prototype of the Phoenix rising through the ashes. We are a world undergoing a transformation right now. As the fast-spreading disease is commanding social distancing, it highlights the loss of the usual physical connections that bind us to each other.

At GRRL HAUS CINEMA we were forced to cancel all our events during this Corona season, and every artist on our program list was left without a show venue.  Energized and in defiance of the virus, we want now more than ever to keep going. We want the artists to keep going. We want to encourage them to stay active, to create, and most importantly to show their work.

So, we have a plan and a need for fundraising.

We are running a fundraising campaign to keep GRRL HAUS relevant and viable. We want to reverse the status quo of art being left behind in times of crisis when it is needed most.

For the next two months we are organizing upcoming online screenings, which we will curate and present live on our platform.

Because of this crisis we are realizing that the international portion of our residency is unlikely to occur this summer. Instead we are planning to run the residency as planned but with local artists if the Corona fates allow.

The funding for planning, programing, and promoting the online screening events, and the late summer local artists residency will be generated from this fundraiser.  We would be inviting the artists to participate for free.

In short:

Support us to support artists!

With your donation, you will be giving us the opportunity to continue to promote, curate and screen works by underrepresented artists as well as sponsoring local artists to attend our late summer residency program.

By supporting GRRL HAUS, you will be able to see amazing films over the next 2 months via our online screenings from the comfort and safety of your home. The dates of these online events will soon be announced.

If you make a donation  of 40 and up, you will receive a GRRL HAUS t-shirt with our new logo - Or one of our past logos (limited supply)

We deeply appreciate every contribution.
TO DONATE PLEASE VISIT OUR GOFUNDME PAGE

🥀Music after screening - starts at 22🥀

Superlove :
Superlove started out as a recording only project with a number of cassette releases on indie tape label Z-Tapes. The project includes Maltese artists and musicians based in Berlin. Their music takes you on a dive through the warm fuzzy waves of their homeland alongside the melancholy of city life, with their blend of lo-fi dream pop, reverb organs, string synths, spacey guitar riffs and intertwining vocals. Their use of the Maltese language on some tracks, gives it all another dimension for listeners who have never heard it before. It is a bitter sweet world of addictively fun and bouncy tunes juxtaposed against quirky lyrics about hope and alienation that sounds as though Galaxie 500, Flaming Lips and Chromatics made a sound baby.

Carbon Thieves:
Brandon Miller - singer/guitar
Florence Marriott - singer
Joe Smith - drums
Christopher Harney - guitar
Baptiste Bonafini - e-bass

Carbon Thieves is an indie rock band started by singer-songwriter Brandon Miller, the name is inspired by the lyrics of the Modest Mouse song 'Parting of the Sensory'. Though we are always changing our band name, this one seems to be sticking around a lil' longer than usual.
Carbon Thieves plays dark psychedelic indie rock with a lil' sumthin extra... alien. Hatched in 2019. Brandon Miller is a Berlin based singer-songwriter and storyteller from Philadelphia, whose intimate warm voice and psychedelic folk songs immediately take the listener by the hand and into a labyrinth of campfire stories.

„Wenn Melancholie Musik wäre, sie würde klingen wie Sarsaparilla. Die Lieder von Brandon Miller schaffen das durch ihre einzigartige Mischung aus Folk, Singer/Songwriter und Pop. Mal singt der gebürtige Amerikaner mit zarter, mal mit fester Stimme – immer vereinnahmend und dabei doch subtil." musikgraph.de

Forget Me Knot
Nov 8th - 10th at Das Giftraum
A knot; an intentional complication that requires attention.

In the exhibition the concept of a knot as a tangled structure is used as a point of departure.
It is constructively exploited and utilised to accelerate the power of unravelling and resolving; literally and symbolically. Reaching a state of catharsis by untangling an oppressive system; pulling gently at the core of it, employing meditative, analytical practices which have been sociologically associated with empowering feminine practices.

Artists:

Demetra Kallitsi , Eleni Tongidou

In a ‘pull on opposite ends’ scenario, Eleni Tongidou’s work reveals the inherent qualities such as tightness and tension of a knot through the material used. Opposite spectrum qualities such as strength in fragility are exposed and communicated by the natural associations of hair. She is interested in starting a conversion on the ritual, cultural and scientific connotations of human hair.

Demetra Kallitsi uses the act of embroidering as a means to stimulate the catalyst of imagination and physicalise the release from destructive mental patterns and symptoms such as those experienced by clinical depression sufferers. She achieves this, both through the symbolism in the visual form of her creations and the inherent meditative and cathartic properties of embroidering.

Following a series of video art exhibitions, GRRL HAUS CINEMA is expanding on its commitment to showcasing the work of women in film by organising a visual art exhibition. It is inviting women artists to the forefront who engage with a variety of visual media.

Mr Royal & Mr Bang : special show
Struggling with latent bouts of schizophrenia and an ever-ongoing fight against perpetual emotions raging within, Monsieur Royal is here to delight the Court!
Commissioned by the mysterious, Her Majesty, he shall remain tremendously dedicated to his task.
Anger, anxiety, paranoia opposed with the swing of the pendulum towards peaks of euphoria and the hope for continual enlightenment.

Monsieur Royal, a psych-rock project currently based in Berlin, with a sound described as a heavy, fuzzzy landscape complemented with psychedelic textures, somewhere between the 70's psych-prog scene and the dirty blues of the early 2000’s.

Unruly Body of Migration
video works by:
Sally Fenaux Barleycorn
Daphna Mero
Isana Shahinas

At Das Giftraum Sept 13th- 15th
Curated by:
Eleni Tongidou &
GRRL HAUS CINEMA

The art exhibition ‘Unruly Body of Migration’ involves the work of diverse film makers who tell a powerful story focusing on the migrating body.
Their own body, the bodies of those around them.

The way the body physically understands and navigates time and space and ‘new time and space’ is at the forefront in these works.

The subject matter is approached through communicating with the contemporaneity of body gestures and expressed physical movement; a stark contrast between restriction and freedom of movement or the timelessness of death and absence.

___________________________________________________________________
Artist Information :

Migration -Daphna Mero
A hybrid experimental piece that integrates dance and the choreography of space within the structure of narrative film. The film portrays immigration as a dehumanizing process executed by an indifferent bureaucratic machine. It follows a young immigrant woman, waiting her turn to see the bureaucrat in-charge of her case.
The camera delves into the world of paper work and investigates, through movement and multiple points of view, alienated interpersonal relationships as they are molded by the structure of space the bureaucratic machine operates in. Space is deconstructed and reconstructed in an attempt to reach a reference point for the bureaucratic world and to connect the un-connectable - the gap between those who seek aid and those who are trying to give it.

Daphna Mero is a film director, choreographer and a professional dancer.
She holds a B.Dance from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, a film diploma from Minshar for Art, Tel-Aviv and MFA in Film/Video from MassArt, Boston. Her work draws inspiration from locations, spaces, and sites. They deal with the human experience via a novel medium, which incorporates visual art and dance. Her short experimental films have been screened in film festivals around the world, and she has won many awards and prizes for her work.

UNBURIED - Sally Fenaux Barleycorn
The Central Mediterranean is considered to be the deadliest migration route in the world, with more than 14,500 deaths recorded in this area since 2014 trying to reach a safe port. Hundreds continue to die monthly. Spanish and Italian governments have started prosecuting and forbidding navigation to any NGOs that will try to save their lives. Our brothers and sisters keep dying. The seas of the world are filled with black bodies.

Sally is the daughter of African and European migrants. She has been working in the film industry since 2009, and premiered her first short film in Amsterdam (NL) in 2015. As a director her focus is to translate emotional experiences into images, ideas into visual metaphors, exploring how much one can communicate beyond the ‘rational’ into the hearts of an audience.

Raum - Isana Shahinas

A short documentary film about the limited living space the family members of the filmmaker were expected to live and function in, at the beginning of their residency in Berlin.

Isana was born in Albania in 2000. In 2015 she migrated with her family to Berlin where they lived in 9 different shelters until they could live in a proper flat.
Her film Raum was realised during her attendance to the funded, integration programme for young women ‘Mpower Girls Film Club’.
More information at http://mpower-maedchen.de
Currently Isana is working on a new film with main focus the various shelter homes she lived in.

Music and Performances 🔥🔥
Lou Tides
Lou Tides is an exploration in shape, dark textures and long forms. Moving away from the brighter palette of her band, TEEN, Lou Tides is the outlet for the raw, the sides of creativity that are not fully expressed in a pop format. Performing mostly solo, Lou Tides is also a movement-based project, focusing on movement as communication in addition to sound and story.
Lou Tides has shared the stage with Of Montreal, Xiu Xiu, and Booker Stardrum. Her single, "Belief" will be released in July, along with the video made in collaboration with comedian/director Lorelei Ramirez.
Kyra Garéy
Kyra Garéy is a unique presence in the Berlin songwriter / psychedelic folk / rock underground scene. As the daughter of a German father and a Tartar mother, she was encouraged to play the piano, guitar and be active in Theater at a young age, sparking her passion for music and art.
With a saturating soulful blues, folk and rock sound she refines her skills day by night, creating a diverse repertoire of compositions.
Her songs are a journey through time, a road trip through the beauty of desolate highways on the search for meaning and love, through the vastness of the universe, through the mystique of the deserts, mountains and steppes where lost souls and spirits live but also the shamans linger.
An infinite story of self-discovery filled with passion, dreams, fragility, suffering, anger, desire, sexuality, love, consciousness, growth, joie de vivre and strength.
Visuals by Tensememori
Tensememori is a female VJ collective based in Berlin. The members all have backgrounds in film/video art and photography, and create visual urban ghosts and dreamlike landscapes in their performances
⚡️⚡️⚡️ after show DJs ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡
Ms. 45 ~~ Ms .45 (Emma Matsuda) is a visual artist and DJ hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Fitzkarraldo
https://fitzkarraldo.bandcamp.com/
two multi-instrumentalists join forces in Berlin creating Fitzkarraldo: the matrimony of the insectile guitar riffs of James (UK) and the thudding drums of Emanuele (Italia). Beginning of 2018 Riccardo Scaramagli (Italia) joins the band. Like the Herzog film after which the band is Christened, Fitzkarraldo is a raw offering which stands groaning even if it isn’t wanted.
nunofyrbeeswax
https://nunofyrbeeswax.tumblr.com/
Nunofyrbeeswax write and play a bunch of pop songs as raw as their hearts in a minimal set up. Their sound has been described as an idiosyncratic blend of garage rock, post punk and “proto-indie” for whatever that means. Their music escapes easy associations, however, they have reminded audiences of
bands such as Half Japanese, the Velvet Underground, The Ex, The Fall, Beat Happening, B52s and The Cramps.

pop up video art show
Curated by Eleni Tongidou
A single view is divided in many parts and details become the center of attention. A union is anticipated in the mind of the observer whilst a bigger picture is discreetly building up.

When hasn’t exploring an inner conflict aided our understanding to become intuitively ever so clear? Several different directions gather enough determination to create one.

In the Video Art exhibition, juxtaposition, comparison and parallelism are communicated through the formal aspects of splitting, dividing and adding up.
